SONG TO END THE WEEKEND ON : WITH A LITTLE LUCK

This weekend’s song is With A Little Luck from 1978, written by Pal McCartney when he was in his band Wings, it tells of a man’s confidence and uncertainty on hearing the woman he loves is pregnant with their child. It reached number five in the charts in that year.
Unlike a lot of McCartney penned numbers, it is based in reality. Linda was expecting at the time and Paul wrote it as a tribute to this.
There are two versions, the album and single version, and the one here is the shorter single version.

I honestly do not know why I haven’t chosen this as my song to end the weekend on before now, as this could be a personal theme song of mine;

With a little luck, we can clear it up.
We can bring it in for a landing,
With a little luck, we can turn it on.
There can be no misunderstanding.

The music is good too.

JUST SO YOU KNOW

If Her Maj lives another ten days, she will have been on the throne for sixty years, which will make her the second British monarch to reach the Diamond jubilee. The only other was Queen Victoria. (George III fell short of his own Diamond Jubilee by about half a year but by then the dear old chap was blind and deaf and liked looking through a telescope from his home in Kew to see how things were going on in Hanover and holding days of mourning for his own death so it would have been wrong to have made him partake if he’d managed it.)
If Her Maj lives until 10th of September 2015, she will surpass Queen Victoria as the longest reigning British Monarch ever.
She is already the oldest reigning British Monarch and has been since surpassing Victoria on 21st December 2007 and George III five days before that.

CYNICAL OUTLOOK

I manage to catch a bit of US President Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech and I’ve come to the conclusion* that he is just like our politicians.
Things will get better. Things will change. Things aren’t perfect now but tomorrow all will be well.
Tomorrow.
They are all the same, no matter what side of the pond.
You think, ‘great! These people have all the answers! The previous lot started off with all the answers but never got round to answering them.’ So you vote for them and all is going to be well, it’s going to be hard, but tomorrow all will be well and then after a while you realise that they don’t have the answers, then you turn to the other lot, and they are making promises and have all the answers so you think, ‘great!’ Etcetera.
They are all the same.
Unlike the (workable if applied correctly no exceptions) way of Anarcho-Communism. Complete and total abolition of the state, of money, a levelling of society, people’s councils, people getting together and everyone doing what they can do best according to their ability, whether street sweeper or doctor, whether actor or farmer, working for the good of one another not to put money in the pockets of the owners and capitalists and elected officials who make promises all will be well tomorrow.
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
It is the only way forward.
But I know now, unless there is a complete revolution, people wake up to the truth, it won’t ever happen. Because people are distracted by working for stuff, working for the company, working to survive. People who choose to work for themselves, for their family, and not declare because of the capitalist/political hassle involved in signing off and ending benefits when really it should be as easy as walking out of your door are labelled and hounded as dole cheats because they don’t fall into what the boss class wants them to be.
Meanwhile,
Things will get better, tomorrow.

*Took me long enough, didn’t it?

LITTLE OLD LADY

Poor little old Domino is starting to show her age.
While the other, younger, two play a lot she spends most of her day sleeping, warming her old bones by the halogen heater in the kitchen.

She is such a sweet old lady, and is the oldest cat I’ve lived with. I don’t want to lose her just yet. She is healthy,* so not just yet.

*I got her to the vet and he said she is just ageing rapidly and to let her find her own level. Healthy, cared for house cats can live into their twenties but usually manage thirteen to fifteen years.

ALL CONNECTED UP

I remember when I was a kid going to see my great grandma (Mum’s Mum’s Mum). She was a very old lady then (80 when I was born, lived till she was 93. Would have lived longer if she hadn’t been forced out of the home she loved and lived in for the previous 50 years and into residential care because her landlord wanted to sell it. She died of sorrow at her loss. Laugh away, but extreme misery can kill) and I remember there were lots of photographs and knick-knacks on the walls and every surface, a typical working class terraced house from the late Victorian era frozen in time.*
Amongst them was a photograph of a serious faced man in a uniform holding the bridle of a horse. That was my great granddad, he was wearing the uniform of a First World War gunner from the Royal Field Artillery and the horse was Daisy, and he rode her across the battlefield. This film War Horse that everyone is talking about from the children’s book by Michael Morpurgo has brought the memory back of being told about this.
Everybody alive has memories of being told of stories like War Horse, stories of a now dead ancestor who did their bit in the Great War. Thanks to people like Mr Morpurgo their memories will be kept alive onto the next generation.

*As far as I can discover, the landlord went in, emptied the house, sold everything he could and destroyed the rest. My grandma and her younger sister, and my Mum didn’t find out till it was too late. For someone obsessed with property, he had no respect for anyone else’s.

SONG TO END THE WEEKEND ON : HIGH ANXIETY

This weekend’s song is from 1977, written by Mel Brooks from the film of the same name, the first film he produced, and it’s High Anxiety.
If you get the chance, get ahold of a copy and watch this film, it’s a real classic bloody hilarious and clever, a parody of many Hitchcock films (look out for the shower scene Mel Brooks style). Alfred himself thought the whole business delightful and sent Mel a crate of wine in gratitude and affection.
The song itself is good natured and kind, with the understated genius, that makes you think as well as laugh, we come to expect from anything Mel Brooks.

London, September 1944. A nuclear device is dropped by a specially constructed Arado jet bomber where it detonates above the aiming point, London Bridge. Nine hundred thousand people are killed instantly, another million and a half before the end of the year dying due to radiation burns and disease.
Thousands of miles away in Canada deposed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill weeps as his beloved city disappears under a boiling mushroom cloud.
Back through the years, to February 1933, where newly elected German Chancellor Adolf Hitler decrees what will become known as the Nuremberg Law that finally ends the low level anti-Semitism plaguing Germany society. He gives a powerful speech to the Reichtag;
“Jews are Germans just like any other Germans, and they will be allowed to take their place in society alongside their gentiles neighbours in the fight against the Communists, the generals, the profiteers, the foreigners starving us.”
Back through the years to Austria 1907, Jewish doctor Eduard Bloch successfully treats Klara Hitler for cancer, pronouncing her free of the disease after months of intense one-to-one treatment. Klara goes on to live to see her son Adolf marrying his sweetheart Eva in 1936. Eduard is honoured by the new chancellor and made the Hitler’s personal doctor.
Forward to August 1939, Germany is on the brink of war with the British Empire and a letter arrives on the desk of Chancellor Hitler, written by one of his favourite scientists, Albert Einstein, describing the latest scientific discovery; the element uranium could be turned into a source of power that could lead to a chain reaction and in the near future the formation of a bomb powerful enough to destroy a whole port and the surrounding territories. . .

SONG TO END THE WEEKEND ON : ENJOY YOURSELF

This weekend’s song is Enjoy Yourself (It’s Later Than You Think). Written in 1949, music by Carl Sigman and words by Herb Magidson, the most famous version is from 1949 by Guy Lombardo, but the version I’m going to post was originally recorded in 1963, by Prince Buster with slightly altered lyrics and a Ska beat.

It’s good to be wise
When you’re young
Cos’ you can only be young
But for once
Enjoy yourself
And have lots of fun
So gonna live, my friend
And it will never done

My ex girlfriend absolutely loves this song. She was always singing it. I suppose it’s what you might call a timeless classic. It is a good song, though, and she isn’t (like a lot of young people are) hedged in by a certain musical type or era.
Living in the past is not healthy.

POSTING OF THE WEEK ENDING 8th JANUARY

This week’s posting of the week, the one which has had most views over the past seven days is (again)
FORGOTTEN FIRST-BORN. (Speculation on a possibility).
Remembered first born at this point, surely.
There are more than eight hundred postings so far on this blog, which was five years old last December 26th (missed the anniversary due to being ill). Why does that one constantly get all the attention? What is it about Henry Gein and his younger brother that attracts so? It can’t be because it’s set around a killer. I’ve got other postings that mention other killers, directly, not their relatives, and none of them have got as many, regular, views.
I suppose it’s apposite really, because today is Henry’s birthday. He would have been a hundred and eleven. Happy birthday and RIP Henry, from one first-born to another.

A SINGULAR EVENT

There has only ever been one British Prime minister assassinated.
In 1811, King George III was incapacitated yet again and his eldest son George Prince of Wales was Regent. He wanted to use his position as king’s representative to give awards and honours to people, but his right to do so was restricted by his government for twelve months, in case the King recovered, so he took his case to a small group of opposition MPs who supported him. However, even though he disagreed with his father’s elected government he was willing to work with them, to save his father more trouble. The Prime Minister, Spencer Perceval, had a tiny majority in the Commons but he held on and the Prince Regent didn’t insist on forcing any changes on him.
However, riots in the north and Midlands and the looming war with the newly formed United States was on Perceval’s mind and he had to convince the Commons review the Orders in Council which badly effected trade.
On the 5th of May 1812, he was crossing the lobby of the Commons to debate the Orders when a one John Bellingham, a failed merchant who blamed Perceval for his business troubles stepped in front of him with a pistol and fired. Perceval was dead before a doctor could be sent for. Bellingham made no attempt to escaped and after a hasty trial, in which an insanity verdict was considered, he was found guilty and hanged.
Two hundred years later, there are distant relatives of both Bellingham and Perceval in the Commons.
You know, if I was a Perceval every time I crossed Bellingham’s path, I would shout ‘whoa!’ and jump back like Bellingham had attacked me. I would even do it if he hadn’t seen me first. I would keep this up until he complained to the House that my behaviour was inappropriate.
By the way, the long gap between postings is to be blamed on my life-threatening condition, doing what it was formed for, ie threatening my life. I’ve been hospitalised due to this problem four times in the past four years, more than in the previous thirteen.

TOLERANCE?

Researchers have discovered a steroid called dexamethasone, which if given to a certain class of pregnant women can reduce the chance of the female foetus developing my congenital, life-threatening condition.
And there are a certain class in society who are totally against this.
Do you know why?
With my condition there is more of the androgen hormone than generally produced while the female foetus is growing in the womb,* which can possibly lead to the girl growing to prefer romantic relationships with other women and rejecting relationships with men.
In other words, if women take this dexamethasone it could stop foetuses developing my condition but it will also more than likely prevent another lesbian being born.
I mean we’re not talking about age appropriately teaching children that a family is a family whether the parents are opposite or same sex.
We’re not talking about teaching children that some people are born to love another lady or another man.
We’re not talking about teaching children that some people feel they are born in the wrong body and are really the other sex.
We are talking about condemning (and that is the word, strong through it may be it is apposite, if you were born with my condition you would use it too) a baby to be born with a serious life-threatening disability just in case otherwise they might be born straight.
Now, I am very sensitive to treating others with tolerance and decency and fairness. Treat those how you would want to be treated and fairs go’s for all are my philosophy. I am also very good at seeing the other chap’s point of view.
I am bisexual and think that GLBT people should have the same rights as any minority, from left-handers to mixed race people but, I am not happy about some poor kid being born saddled with my condition, with the cortisone chain around their neck, feeling out of tune with life and never feeling 100% well just so a few old dykes won’t get lonely.

*This can produce what doctors call ambiguous genitalia. Don’t want to be crude but when I was born although I was female inside, it was hard at first glance to tell what sex I was by looking at the outside. They operated to trim everything and tidy everything and make me look more like the gender I was. That’s why I have no sensations (though I can think myself to orgasm with the right person) because the surgery was done without considering I might loose sensitive nerve endings.
